It is now 6 months since the tragic fire that destroyed Orsett Hall.

The Grahame Thomas Pavillion will be holding its first function for over 400 people on 16th November with the”Official” opening on Friday 23rd November with former Conservative Leader Ian Duncan-Smith.

Christmas bookings are now being taken including Christmas Day and New Years Eve.

Tribute Nights are back from January 08

Traditional Sunday Lunches are available from 18th November

Building work is set to commence later this month on a basement of the new hotel which we are currently being finalised with Thames Gateway.

It is hoped that we have as many as 60 rooms to let for accommodation but will keep you advised on our progress.

Our aim is still to have the structure of Orsett Hall and ground floor completed by July 2008 with the rooms coming on line after that.

We to date have over 40 weddings booked for 2009!!

At this point I would like to personally invite anybody to come and view our New Function Suite and check our progress at Orsett Hall

To date Orsett Hall has not lost any of its Management Team through this very trying period(6 months) which shows not only our but their determination and belief that we want to bring back this wonderful personal venue.

Please feel free to monitor our progress on the website which will be constantly updated and hope to see you when you visit Orsett Hall in the not too distant future.

NOTICE RE: FIRE IN MAY 2007
A fire and police investigation has now been concluded and that it has been confirmed that Orsett Hall was not responsible in any way whatsoever for the fire. All reasonable precautions had been taken and, as such, the fire was an event that simply could not have been predicted nor avoided. A number of weddings were booked to take place prior to the fire and as a result of the fire itself these events could not be held. Whilst a contract existed between Orsett Hall and those who had made bookings prior to the fire, the event itself significantly altered the nature of all outstanding contractual rights and/or obligations from what either Orsett Hall or its customers could reasonably have contemplated at the time that the contract came into being. The fire made it impossible for Orsett Hall or its customers to fulfil their obligations under the contract. As such, through no fault of either party, the contract was frustrated because of the fire. When a contract is frustrated, any monies paid from one party to another must be reimbursed. No further obligations are imposed upon either party whatsoever. Orsett Hall will rely upon all relevant statutory provisions as well as the extensive body of common law in relation to its stance concerning the frustration of the contract.

Additionally, Clauses 13 and 14 of Orsett Hall's standard terms and conditions make it clear that it will accept no liability for a wedding ceremony not taking place howsoever caused and suggest that appropriate insurance policies are taken out by customers to insure them in relation to any loss. In light of the above, Orsett Hall will refund all deposits - providing suitable evidence of booking can be produced. Additionally, all marriage licence fees will be reimbursed at the same time although there is no obligation upon Orsett Hall to do so. No further monies will be paid out in relation to the amounts sought as Orsett Hall does not accept liability for the fire.

Although Orsett Hall has no legal liability to its customers, it has been sympathetic to the position of its customers and every opportunity was taken to assist all individuals who had previously made bookings with finding alternative venues. Indeed, it went as far as obtaining verbal assurances from various competitors within the area that they would honour the amounts charged by our client concerning pre-booked weddings. That they did not do so is a matter for them and unfortunately Orsett Hall are not in a position to comment in regards to that particular matter. Additionally, our client has had to attempt to rebuild its business from the ground up and is still in the process of doing so.

We will not engage in further correspondence on this matter unless from those individuals who have yet to receive their deposits and/or marriage licence fees.

Piece that we put in the Essex Chronicle ~ October 2007
Orsett Hall Fire ~ 11th May 2007

With regards to the fire which totally destroyed the Orsett Hall on 11th May 2007, we would like to express that Orsett Hall staff were fully trained with regards to the evacuation procedures in the event of a fire. The Hotel had all the necessary Fire Certificates and up to date inspections were always carried out. Two of our receptionists successfully evacuated the building of guests and staff, when they were aware of the fire and thankfully, no one was injured. Once the Fire Brigade arrived, the hotel was handed over to them and they did their utmost with regards to trying to save the Hotel. However, due to it being a 400 year old listed building, the fire took hold and the water pressure in the area was not good and tragically the beautiful building burnt to the ground. After speaking to the Fire Service , we found out that although the Fire Service does say that every fire is preventable, the fire at Orsett Hall was not preventable without hindsight... we hope that the tragic events can help to prevent this ever happening elsewhere and that the help and support of the local community have helped us through this terrible time and we thank them so much for their support. It is not only a sad loss for Lynn & Steve Haynes and their Staff, but also to the public who have at one time or another, attended a Wedding, Luncheon or Function at the Orsett Hall, but it is also a sad loss for English Heritage.
